In MakeMusic Cloud's Sight Reading Builder, you can easily build and customize Sight Reading exercises. You can create assignments based on the Sight Reading templates you customize. When students load or retry the assignment they will receive a new exercise based on the template assigned. Follow the steps in this article to setup your score for your Sight Reading template.
This tool is only available in MakeMusic Cloud for Full Access Teachers. In order to assign exercises from Sight Reading Builder you will need to have classes with Standard Access. To purchase Full Access and Standard student subscriptions, please contact our Sales Team at sales@makemusic.com.

Step 1: access the Sight Reading Builder.
Access MakeMusic Cloud's Sight Reading Builder by hovering over the Navigation Drawer on the left side of the screen and choosing Sight Reading Builder.
Step 2: (optional) open a saved Sight Reading template.
Locally saved Sight Reading templates can be opened directly into the Sight Reading Builder. For more information view our article Saving, opening, and assigning a Sight Reading template.
Step 3: instrument selection.
To begin setting up your template, you need to select the instrument(s) to include in your Sight Reading template. Select Solo instruments to select just one instrument, select Ensembles to choose an ensemble, or select Custom ensemble to customize an ensemble.
Under Solo instruments select an instrument family and choose a single instrument from that family. Once an instrument is selected, continue to Step 4.
Select Ensembles to select a specific ensemble for the Sight Reading template. Once an ensemble is selected, continue to Step 4.
Optional: Select Custom ensemble to create an ensemble from scratch or select a specific ensemble for customization. Once an ensemble has been chosen, you can edit, add, and remove instruments from the score.
To create an ensemble from scratch, select Build from scratch. If you'd like to customize a predefined ensemble, select an ensemble under Select a template to customize.
Use the Number of instruments slider to set the number of staves in your score.
Choose an Instrument Family and an Instrument. Edit the Full Staff Name and the Abbreviated Staff Name by selecting the field and entering the desired staff name. Transposition interval can't be changed.
Select See more to customize how the staff is grouped, the brackets, and to add staves above and below the selected staff or remove the selected staff.
If you'd like to define instrument groups in your score, select the box next to Group with the next staff to add include or remove the staff from a group.
Define the First level bracket and the Second level bracket. Use the Type of bracket dropdown to select the bracket you'd like to use.
Slide the Number of staves included slider to define the number of staves within the bracket.
Select the Add stave above and Add stave below buttons to add a staff above or below the selected staff. If you'd like to remove the selected staff from the score, select Remove staff.
Select in the score to edit the next staff.
Once you have finished building or customizing an ensemble, select Save ensemble setup.
Step 4: tempo selection.
After selecting an instrument, an ensemble, or customizing your ensemble for your Sight Reading template, the Tempo of the Exercise page appears.
Select Use random tempo markings to set a tempo range and how much the tempo can change in between exercises generated in your template. Edit the From and To fields to change the range of tempo markings. Edit the In steps of field to define how many beats per minute the tempo can change.
Select the box next to one or all of the specific tempo markings. These can be used along with the random tempo markings. Select Apply to add the tempo markings to your Sight Reading template.
Step 5: duration selection.
Select Bars, Beats, or Seconds to set a range for the duration of the Sight Reading exercise. Edit the From and To fields to change the range. Select Apply to add the duration to your Sight Reading template.
Step 6: level selection.
There are ten preset levels that can be customized to any of your needs. Select a level for your template using the Difficulty Level dropdown.
