In the SmartMusic's Sight Reading Builder you have the option to select predefined difficulty levels and customize the levels to your needs in your Sight Reading template.

Time signatures.


Optional: While you are customizing your template's level, the exercise automatically regenerates a new score after an item has been toggled by default. Select the box next to Auto generate to turn the function off to set all your customizations and select generate_a_new_score_button.png to generate a new score when you are ready.




Select time_signature_button.png to choose the time signature(s) to be used in your Sight Reading template. Select the box to the left of a time signature to include it. Custom time signatures can created and added to your Sight Reading template using the Custom 1-4 options. Select the box to the left of a Custom option, then fill in the numerator (left field) and denominator (right field) values. 


Under Advanced options choose to allow only one time signature in the score, allow the time signature to change in the score, allow the use of subdivisions, and to always keep the same beat when the time signature changes.





Key signatures.


Select key_signtautre_button.png to choose the key signature(s) to be used in your template. In addition to the Major key signatures, the relative Natural, Harmonic, and Melodic minor key signatures can be added as well by selecting the box next to each mode.




Choose to only have one key signature or allow the key signature to change throughout your Sight Reading template. If you have Change key signature every N measure(s) selected, you can customize the distance between key changes using Limit modulations by steps. Enter the steps in both directions in the From and to fields to set the distance allowed between a key change.


Display reminder accidentals shows the accidentals within the key signature. If you have selected Level 1 or Level 2 this option is turned on by default.





Rhythmic patterns.


Select rhythmic_patterns_button.png to select preset rhythmic patterns and create custom rhythmic patterns to use in your Sight Reading template. Select Non percussion or Percussion for specific rhythmic patterns for melodic or percussive instruments.


Filter by Time Signature to see All, Simple, or Compound rhythmic patterns.




Optional: Select Create a New Pattern under My Custom Patterns to create your own rhythmic pattern.




The Create Custom Pattern page appears. Select add_new_note_button.png to add a note to the staff.




Underneath the staff, the Edit Note box appears.




Select any note or rest value.




Select the Grace Note dropdown to add a grace note(s) before the note.




Use the Roll dropdown to add a roll to the note.




Select the Tuplet dropdown to create a tuplet. Tuplets are defined as a ratio, for example 3:2. This means 3 notes in the space of 2 notes. The note value selected is the value the tuplet is based on. If you have the eighth note selected, an eight note triplet can be created. After selecting the desired tuplet, select add_new_note_button.png to add the rest of the tuplet.




Add one or two augmentation dots to the note.




Select the box next to Tie Note to add a tie between two notes. Select add_new_note_button.png to have the tie appear.




Use the Delete Note button to remove the highlighted note from the pattern. 




Multi Note Patterns can Start on Beats allows you to define what beat(s) the rhythmic pattern can start on. To allow the rhythmic pattern to start on half beats, check the box next to Can start on half beats. By default the rhythmic pattern is set to start on any beat. Select any beat(s) to disable them.


Use the slider for Relative weighting for the pattern to define the emphasis of the rhythmic pattern in the selected level. 




Under Use this pattern in the following levels, select which level(s) this custom rhythmic pattern appears in.


Under Apply Pattern To select Non percussion or Percussion to include the rhythmic pattern in one of the instrument specific categories. Select AllSimple, or Compound to add the rhythmic pattern to a specific time signature category.



Select Save to save your pattern.




Rhythmic patterns that are included in your Sight Reading template will be marked with a included_rhythmic_pattern.png in the top left corner of the rhythmic pattern box. Select included_rhythmic_pattern.png to include or not include a rhythmic pattern in your Sight Reading template.




 Select pencil_edit_button.png to edit the weighting for any Pattern Presets or edit a custom pattern you created in your Sight Reading template.




The Edit Custom Pattern page appears. Use the slider to define the Relative weighting of the pattern for the level selected. Select Save to save your changes.




Select delete_custom_pattern_button.png to delete any custom patterns that were created.





Instrument ranges.


Edit the ranges of the instruments in your Sight Reading template. Select instrument_ranges_button.png, the Ranges for included instruments page appears.


Optional: Select  pencil_edit_button.png to edit an individual instrument range.




The Edit Instrument Range page appears. Use Low Pitch (MIDI value) and High Pitch (MIDI value) sliders to set the range of the instrument.


Select the box above a note under Included Notes to add or remove notes from the instrument. Select Save to save your changes.




Under Pitch Options use the Ratio of repeated pitches slider to define the frequency repeated pitches appear in the Sight Reading template. Use the Ratio of accidentals slider to define the frequency accidentals appear in the Sight Reading template.


Make the Sight Reading template rhythmic only by selecting the box next Make it a rhythm only exercise.





Interval, rhythmic, and other options.


Define interval, rhythmic, and other options for your Sight Reading template. Select interval_rhythmic_other_options.png. The Interval options page appears.


Select the box next to an interval(s) to add or remove it from the Sight Reading template. To follow the specific interval(s) by a step in the template, select the box next to a specific interval(s).




Limit the number of consecutive intervals that are higher than a specific interval by typing in a number in the Limit to field and selecting the interval using the interval dropdown. Approach the upper and lower range(s) of your instrument(s) lower or equal to a specific interval using the interval dropdown.


Based on the key signature(s) selected in your template, select the box next to the specific scale degree(s) to define which ones can be used.




Select Rhythmic options. The Rhythmic options page appears. Enable syncopation, avoid two consecutive rests, and choose to not combine triplets with 16th notes in consecutive exercises. Select the box next to each option to enable or disable these Rhythmic options.


Use the two sliders for ties inside a measure and ties between two measures to define the frequency ties are used in your Sight Reading template.




Select Other options. The Other options page appears. Enable or disable specific clef options for the viola and cello. Enable or disable the option to move over the clarinet break by step intervals.





Articulations, dynamics, and ornaments.


Select articulations_dynamics_ornaments_button.png to define which articulations, dynamics, and ornaments appear in your Sight Reading template.


The Use of articulations page appears. Use the sliders for Staccato notes, Accented notes, Tenuto notes, and Marcato notes to define the frequency these articulations appear in your Sight Reading template. Use the Slurs slider to define the frequency slurs will appear in your Sight Reading template.




Define the number of notes in a slur using the Maximum number of notes in a slur. Define the number of articulations allowed on a note using the Maximum number of articulations per note slider.




Select Dynamics, the Use of dynamics page appears. Select the box above the dynamic(s) to add or remove it from your Sight Reading template.


Define the frequency the dynamics selected appear in your Sight Reading template using the Density of dynamics slider.




Allow only one dynamic to be used in the template by selecting the box next to Use only one dynamic value for the whole exercise.


Select boxes next to Hairpin, cresc., and dim. to set how dynamic changes appear in your Sight Reading template. Define the frequency dynamic changes appear using the Density of hairpins, cresc. & dim. slider.




Select Ornaments. The Use of ornaments page appears. Use the sliders for each ornament to add and define the frequency they appear in your Sight Reading template.





Musicality options.


Select musicality_options_button.png to define musicality influences for the template. The Musicality - Melodic influences page appears.


Define the Ratio of arbitrary jumps, Ratio of scale fragments, and the Ratio of arpeggio fragments in your Sight Reading template using the sliders below each option. 




Select the box next to the scale degree(s) you'd like to start and end the Sight Reading exercise on.




Select the box next to Use melodic sequences to turn on the use of a melodic sequence in your Sight Reading template. Define the Notes per sequence and the Number of sequences using the sliders below each option.


Select the box next Randomize sequences to allow the defined sequences to be randomized. Select the box next to Synchronize sequences every N measures to set the number of measures the sequence synchronizes. Use of melodic sequences has to be on to Randomize sequences and Synchronize sequences.




Select Rhythmic options. The Musicality - Rhythmic options page appears.


Use the Rhythmic diversity slider to emphasize a variety of rhythms in your Sight Reading template. Select the box next to Randomize rhythmic diversity to enable or disable the randomization.




Select Ensemble options. The Musicality - Ensemble options page appears. Ensemble options affect ensembles only.


Add multiple rhythmic lines to your Sight Reading template using the Number of independent rhythmic lines slider. Select the box next to Use only unison or octava between instruments only allow a unison or octave interval between instruments within your score. If this option is turned off, any interval between the instruments in your score is allowed.





Playback and view options.


In the Sight Reading Builder you can listen to the generated exercises and change the view of the score on screen.


Select play_button.png to listen to the exercise on screen. If you'd like to mute or unmute the playback select mute_button.png.




While playing back an exercise, select metronome_button.png to turn on a metronome click.




Zoom in or out of the Sight Reading score, by using zoom_buttons.png. You can also view the score in full screen by selecting full_screen_button.png.
